Dear Friend

Much is happening at Horizons that is deepening our impact on children and families as they face significant challenges. This fall was in full swing as we once again welcomed volunteers back in our classrooms, supporters who want to see their donations at work, a crew to film a new video highlighting our services, and elected officials who value Horizons for its expertise working with children and families experiencing homelessness. Check out the resulting video that gives a great overview of Horizons and the families we serve.

winter1.pngHorizons Earns National NAEYC Accreditation
This Fall, Horizons once again earned and received accreditation from The National Association for the Education of Young Children, a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. Less than 10 percent of all childcare centers, preschools, and kindergartens nationally achieve this recognition. “All of the children in our program are experiencing homelessness which has proven negative effects on their development. NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous process and validates that our program is of the very highest quality, which our students need,” said Kate Barrand, President and CEO of Horizons. “This achievement is objective proof that our teachers and staff provide an exceptional environment for children.” <Read more>

winter3.pngCreating Powerful Playtimes with Boston Children's Museum
Horizons and the Boston Children’s Museum partnered to create and bring new Powerful Playtimes playgroups to local shelters. This is the first of several programs to come out of the ongoing partnership between the Museum, Horizons and Eastern Bank, which has generously funded the collaboration. The initial 5-week-program took place in three shelters in the greater Boston area and aimed to show parents the value of play in a child’s early development, giving parents the tools and confidence to create meaningful play opportunities for their children. <Read more>

winter.pngA new partnership makes care convenient for families
We have long known that homelessness worsens health outcomes for children and their families. A growing partnership with Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program now makes healthcare more accessible to the families Horizons serves. Thanks to the new Family Clinic, high-quality care is just a short walk away from Horizons’ Early Education Center, making scheduled visits and drop-ins more convenient for families. Before, there were many barriers to families receiving care, now, visits can be scheduled before or after the child’s school day, in the very same building, making it more efficient for parents who also need to minimize travel expenses and time so they can get to their employment.
